3 Things You Didn't Know Could Cause a Breakout

adult-acne-promo

There are certain things you just know will make you break out—not washing off your foundation after a long night out, cradling your phone against your face all day at work, or experiencing major stress (like having a huge fight with your boyfriend, which always did it for me). But here are a few less-notorious causes of breakouts that celebrity aesthetician Renee Rouleau thinks you should keep in mind this season.

1. Air travel. Dry cabin air robs the skin of moisture, which can lead to a buildup of dehydrated cells that keep oils trapped underneath, Rouleau says. The result? Post-flight breakouts. She suggests packing a hydrating serum to reapply every hour while in the air (in fact, she designed a new product with this purpose in mind—Renee Rouleau Pro Remedy Oil for Air, Land, and Sea) and, once you land, using an exfoliating scrub to remove dry surface cells, followed by a hydrating mask to seal in moisture.

2. Too much of a good brush. While we can't say enough good things about our beloved Clarisonics (and similar sonic skin-cleansing brushes), Rouleau says it's not a good idea to overdo it with these popular devices. "These brushes can overstimulate the skin, resulting in breakouts," she notes. "While it’s important to exfoliate, going over the top with it can cause skin to become dry, in turn increasing oil and breakouts." She suggests limiting use, or laying off the brush completely, when faced with a suspicious breakout. I've started using mine only every other day because my skin's been breaking out and I don't want to further irritate it.

3. Dairy overload. I don't want to be the one to come between you and your sweets, especially this time of year, but it's worth considering whether you might suddenly be OD'ing on dairy—a dietary factor that many experts, Rouleau included, believe can trigger breakouts. To truly determine whether dairy is the cause of your acne, you should give it up for at least three weeks, Rouleau says. Yikes! But well worth it if you end up with less acne angst, right? Maybe slate this experiment for after Jan. 1. In the meantime, see what happened when Beth gave up dairy for this reason recently.

5 Beauty Lessons We Learned This Year From Beyonce

Elevator fights, relationship rumors, new music—2014 was a crazy year for Beyonce, but through it all she held it together in the style department. Here's what she showed us about hair and makeup:

beyonce-wet-hair-2014-grammys-how-to

Lesson 1) When you need to take your sexiness to 11, wet hair is the way to go (and here's how she gets the look).

Lesson 2) Sometimes a $5 nail polish is all you need. Stop stressing.

Lesson 3) There is no limit to how long you can go with braids. She went thigh-level and it still looked great.

Lesson 4) Making perfect skin has to do with using multiple concealer shades. Let her makeup artist explain.

Lesson 5) Bad bangs can happen to anyone. Soldier on, ladies. Soldier on.

5 Beauty Lessons We Learned This Year From Jennifer Lawrence

It was announced today that Jennifer Lawrence was Google's top-searched celebrity of 2014, making our collective girl crush on her truly official. Here's what we learned in the beauty department from watching the Mockingjay star this year:

jennifer-lawrence-mockingjay-updo-hairstyle

Lesson 1) Having short hair does not count you out of the updo action. You've just got to get creative.

Lesson 2) Even if femme fatale isn't your usual thing, you can still pull it off if you feel like it.

Lesson 3) A hair accessory need not be fancy to look fancy. Anything can be elegant when paired with the right thing—including a stretchy headband.

Lesson 4) Nail art can be chic when done in classic colors.

Lesson 5) As her growing-out stages proved, even when you have all sorts of hairstylists and products at your disposal, growing out your hair can seem to take forever. Hang in there.

And if you're wondering why everyone was obsessed with Lawrence this year, check out how charming she is in our video below and you'll start to get it.

3 Ways to DIY a Chic Glitter Manicure Using Drugstore Polish

'Tis the season for all things glittery, and your nails are the easiest place to indulge in some twinkle without going overboard. Here are three looks from Instagram that you can DIY with no stress—using colors you can grab at the drugstore en route home from work tonight!

1. Midnight-blue nail polish with moody purple glitter at the base. Colors used: L'Oreal Colour Riche Nail Polish in After Hours and Pink Party Dress.

2. Chunkier rainbow glitter at the base for a jewel-box effect. The exact shades: Maybelline Color Show Nail Lacquer in Deep In Violet and Mosaic Prism.

3. Glitter gone a bit edgy, in muted gunmetal, steel, and black. Colors shown: Revlon Nail Enamel in Rebel Graffiti atop Revlon Nail Enamel in Rich.

You could also do the now-classic move of painting just your nail tips in glitter—which, conveniently, is also an excellent cheat for covering up chips in an existing manicure.

Got a drugstore nail polish color, glittery or otherwise, that you're loving this season? Share the name!

How a Cute Ikea Bathroom Bench Helped Cure My Dry Skin

My skin gets really dry in winter. As in, I'll peel off my black yoga pants and there will be a snow-like dusting of skin flakes lining the inside. Not a cute situation but also not a comfortable one—skin that dry gets itchy. Keep-you-up-at-night itchy.

Happily, though, I've finally found a fix better than anything else I've tried (from super-charged body lotions to cranking a humidifier overnight). I'm strictly following the dermatologist rule of applying my lotion within one minute of showering, to seal moisture in rather than letting tons escape. The main reason I never managed to do this before is that I'd make my way to my bed, where I could comfortably sit and take my time rubbing in my various creams and lotions. But it's a long walk from my shower to my bed, and I'd get distracted with other tasks like combing my hair, or would feel really chilly and start throwing on clothes before fully lotioned-up.

On Pinterest, I always see photos of bathrooms with cozy chairs, ottomans, or benches in them and think what a perfect idea that is. Why doesn't every bathroom have a cozy place to sit—in the still-steamy and warm post-shower air—and apply skin care products in a leisurely fashion? True, not all have the room, and mine definitely can't accommodate an armchair, but I realized I did have the perfect parking spot for a small bench, right outside my shower door, in front of the towel bar. After looking at Home Goods and other stores for an inexpensive one to try out, I decided on the spa-like Ikea Molger bench in birch.

ikea-mogler-bathroom-bench

The best part: It has a shelf underneath where I stash my current favorite body and foot lotions and my hydrating face serum, plus spare towels and washcloths (which I still swear by for exfoliation, despite all the fancy products, tools, and procedures I've tried). For now, I have a towel on top to make it more cozy, but I hope to enlist the help of my seamstress mom to make me a custom cushion one day. It's already basically my favorite place in the whole house: a spot where I sit and totally spoil my skin for a few minutes after my evening shower, when the kids are in bed and there's total peace and quiet. And needless to say, the dry itchiness is pretty much cured as a result.

If you have a tiny bathroom, you could try the smaller Molger storage stool—or just use your closed toilet as your perch and stash your favorite moisturizing products within arm's reach. And, of course, you can even just bring your lotions etc. into the shower and apply them after the water's off—but that just isn't as relaxing.

Do you apply lotion immediately post-shower? Where do you do it?

What Scarlett Johansson Really Wants for Christmas

Let's go ahead and call 2014 what it was: the Year of Scarlett Johansson. The actress starred in Captain American: Winter Soldier, Chef, and Lucy. She gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Rose, this fall. She wed French journalist Romain Dauriac. Oh, and did we mention she also turned 30? But just in case there was any doubt this really was the year of Scarlett, last night Barbara Walters named her one of 2014's Most Fascinating People.

The same day she taped the Barbara Walters special, Scarlett sat down with Lipstick to talk all things baby, holiday, and, of course, beauty.

scarlett-johansson-barbara-walters

Tell us about your morning beauty routine.
"On a regular day, I always clean my face first thing in the morning. I usually use Cetaphil or maybe a Clarins wash—something not too fragrant and non-comedogenic and all that stuff. I like the Clarins beauty balm. I usually will use a tinted moisturizer, and I wear concealer, mascara, sometimes. I usually pencil in my brow, and that’s about it. And some bronzer or blush. It depends day to day. I don’t wear a full face of makeup every day, but I wear makeup every day."

Has your beauty routine changed at all since having your daughter?
"Not really. Trying to find time is obviously a challenge. I’m sure that balances out eventually, but with a little baby, just trying to find time to go to the gym and get a haircut and all that stuff is not as easy. But you know, you manage. You pop out for an hour if you can, have someone watch the baby, and you come back. But my actual beauty routine is the same, low-maintenance."

Speaking of Rose, what do you want to teach her about beauty?
"I used to watch my mom get glamorous. She wore a lot of makeup, like a full face. She still does, pretty much—she’s pretty glamorous. But she encouraged my sister and me...she always let us wear makeup. She always let us play with nail polish and lipstick. She encouraged us to express ourselves with our makeup and clothes and all that. She was always very big on just being yourself, be who you are. And that is, I think, a nice rule to live by for beauty and otherwise."

Where do you get your beauty inspiration?
"I get my beauty inspiration from the street. I live in New York, and I live in Paris, and I spend time traveling a lot. I like to watch what people are wearing, how they wear their makeup, how they put their clothes together. Also, my girlfriends are beautiful and creative and have really interesting, different types of aesthetics, so I’m inspired by my girlfriends too."

Do you talk about beauty together?
"Oh, yeah, definitely! If someone is using a great new product, we talk about that stuff, sure. My friend Julia got me really into nail stamps. Her nails are insane all the time, and she’s really good at doing them. So she inspired me with her nail art, and now I have a crazy nail stamp collection and no time to apply any of them. She was like, 'You’ve got to get all these!' So I bought them all, and now I basically just watch her use them."

Let's talk holiday beauty. You’re the face of Dolce and Gabbana's cosmetics and The One fragrance, and you rock a red lip better than pretty much any woman we know. What's your secret?
dolce-gabbana-holiday-makeupLimited-editions for holiday: Glow Bronzing Powder in Desert, $51, and The Shine Lipstick in Real Red, $37

"There’s a shade for everybody, and a lot of times people don’t realize that and they think there is just one kind of red, but you can (and should) match a red to your skin tone. There are warm and cool shades. Dolce has such a great range of reds, and their lipsticks are fabulous. It’s really the best part of my job [laughs], sorry. I don’t know if I’m supposed to say that, but it’s true.

How do you shop for holiday gifts for other people?
"A couple of years ago, I was in such a panic because, you know I have a lot of siblings and a pretty big family, and I was just panicked to buy my 38-year-old brother a Christmas present. I was like, 'What am I doing? This is a children’s holiday; I don’t need to buy presents for everybody.' We were all going nuts about it, and I noticed it was taking five hours to do gift opening, and it was ridiculous. So we put the kibosh on that. Now we do Secret Santa, and we have a limit of a couple hundred dollars, and it’s very competitive to really impress with your creativity. And it’s nice because you’re concentrating specifically on one individual person. So the past three or four years, we’ve been doing Secret Santa, and that works the best. I usually get a lot of personal presents for my person. Last year I got my sister-in-law, so I got her really nice tights and a vintage sweater and a really cute nail polish. Actually makeup is a really nice thing to get people, and I’m not just saying that."

It's so personal though. How do you do it?
"I usually will get a lipstick or a really nice nail polish or a cream shadow—something that’s versatile. The nice thing about buying a piece of makeup with the luxury brands is that even if you can’t afford to give a handbag or accessory that way, it’s still precious, but it’s affordable. So it’s a nice gift."

What’s on your personal wish list?
"On my wish list this year, other than extra sleep? I know what I want to invest in. I wouldn’t trust anybody to buy it for me. The other day I was saying I really want to buy a leather skirt this year. I think I’m going to do a pencil—high waist, right above the knee."

An Eyeliner Trick You Have to Use for Your Office Holiday Party

Office holiday parties can cause a little bit of a makeup freak-out. You want to look special but not crazy or over-the-top—a.k.a. water-cooler fodder. Which is why this eyeliner style Sienna Miller wore to the American Sniper premiere last night is perfect.

sienna-miller-liquid-liner-bronze-eyeliner
sienna-miller-liquid-liner-bronze-eyeliner-close

She wore a smooth line of black liquid eyeliner on top with a softer line of bronze pencil on the bottom. Why this is so great: The bronze balances the more eye-catching line of black, but it's soft enough not to read as EYELINER from a few paces back. Which means your coworkers might not even register that you're wearing eyeliner until they get up close—they'll just notice that you look a little extra amazing. Effortlessly. Like the way you killed it at that one meeting earlier this month.

Any of you going to try this one out?

Change-Your-Life Beauty Tip: How to Make Blond Hair Look Brighter Without Changing Your Hair Color

Hairstylist Cervando Maldonado used a sneaky trick to make Kirsten Dunst's hair look even blonder at the premiere of Unbroken earlier this week. Curious? Oh, come one, you definitely want to know.

kirsten-dunst-blond-hair-color-trick

After he was done styling the hair, he says, "I sprayed Klorane Dry Shampoo through the ponytail to absorb oil and create a blonder, slightly more matte look." This makes sense when you think about it—blond hair looks warmer (and less blond) the shinier it is, so matting it a bit would make it look brighter. Of course, you have to be careful with this—no one wants hair that looks dull. But just a touch of dry shampoo might make lighter hair colors sing.

Any of you blondies ever found this to be true?

3 Makeup Tricks You're Probably Not Using That'll Give You Extra-Amazing Eyes

We're still in the thick of holiday-party madness, which means you're probably suddenly looking for ways to look just a little more special. Well, these tricks we've seen on Lipstick recently will help your eyes get there, at least. Here are three ways to make your peepers look five-star amazing:

Trick 1) Pair your liquid liner with a subtle glowy pencil on bottom—it softens the look and frames your eyes beautifully.
sienna-miller-liquid-liner-bronze-eyeliner

Trick 2) If you're going for a smoky eye and your hands aren't so steady, try smudging out your liner at the outer corners—it gives you the effect of eyeshadow, but in a more smoldering way.

Rihanna's Hair Game Is On POINT Right Now

Rihanna Instagrammed a picture of her hair looking like the stuff unicorns and dreams and happiness are made of yesterday, and I've got the shot below to throw your whole morning off.

in transit.

badgalriri (@badgalriri) Gru 12, 2014 at 7:00 PST

Full, flowing, and fierce—all the F words you want involved with your hair. Of course, this is the woman who basically shut everything on down on this site when she showed up covered in rhinestones at the CFDA Awards. The girl knows how to make a statement, even when it's just with a casual shot of perfect hair.

Side note: It could also be lighter, but the tone of the shot makes it hard to say for sure. I'll keep an eye out to see if there's a been a hair color switch!

One last thing: Find out what her makeup must-have is below:

Hey, Santa: This Is What I (Beauty Writer Beth Shapouri) Would Like for Christmas. Thanks

I get beauty products sent to me in volumes that would basically make anyone's OCD tendencies go berserk, and, yet, even I, Beth Shapouri, have makeup, hair, fragrance, and, skin care goodies I covet. Here's what I'd like to find under my tree this year. (Hint, hint, elves.)

kevyn-aucoin-making-faces-palette
The Kevyn Aucoin Limited Edition Look Book, based on the tips in the late beauty guru's first iconic book Making Faces. I basically believe this set can make my face look like Jennifer Lopez's. I can dream anyway.

aedes-de-ven-perfume-frangrance-gift-guide-2014
Aedes de Venustas perfume. This niche fragrance, made by the most charming fragrance shop in my neighborhood is divine, unique, and, well, not cheap. But the sexy, unique mix of tomato leaf, rhubarb, hazelnut, and incense smells like every luxe penny of its price tag.

charlotte-tilbury-magic-cream
Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream. It took me a couple of days to understand the magic of this stuff. But after day two, I was bummed all I got was a tiny little sample. It makes your face feel like the softest cashmere sweater on a pillow made of marshmallow fluff and chinchilla fur. And I promise that's way more appealing than it sounds.

davines-conditioner-gift-guide
Davines Love Smoothing Conditoner. After I slather this on, you'd never know my hair was coarse and kinky and prone to frizz. I don't really know what's in it or why it smells so good (blah, blah, blah—something about borage seed oil and rice wax), but I suspect it's made of rainbows.

nars-orgasm-gift-guide
Nars Orgasm Blush. I've used it for years, and it's the only thing I freak out about when I hit pan—which I am dangerously close to doing with my current compact. It's basically sultriness in blush form and there's a reason everyone loves it.

5 Beauty Lessons We Learned This Year From Taylor Swift

Like all years of her life so far, 2014 was a big year for Taylor Swift. She released a new album, cemented her bestie-ness with several other celebrities, and, most important, for the purposes of this post, cut her hair off. here are five things she taught us about hair, makeup, and possibly life:

taylor-swift-acma-2014-blue-eyeshadow

Lesson 1) There's no such thing as hair that's too short for bedhead. Bedhead is for everyone.

Lesson 2) Having the same hair as your best friend isn't something that needs to stop in kindergarten. If you both look good in it, who cares? Especially if your best friend happens to be a supermodel.

Lesson 3) Shimmery eyeliner is a legit makeup choice, especially when you want your eyes to look extra glowy.

Lesson 4) Wavy bangs can actually work. So stop straightening yours like your life depends on it.

Lesson 5) Bright blue eye makeup can make for one smoldering smoky eye when done well. One of the secrets? Light shimmer at the inner corners.

Whoa, Whoa, Whoa. Prince William Called Kate Middleton's Hair a "Nightmare"?

Hard to believe, but true: At a visit to a homeless charity, Prince William participated in a bit of mentoring and his advice to an aspiring hairdresser was to try styling Kate's "nightmare" hair, reports The Telegraph. No joke—I nearly gasped when I read this during my morning news scan.

kate-middleton-hair-basketball-game

I think we can safely assume he's joking because of the obvious facts (namely that Kate Middleton's hair might be the most admired around the world. NBD.). I think it's kind of cute to see super-famous couples participate in the sort of ribbing we all do in our own relationships, but Wills, bringing hair into it might be pushing things a little bit too far.

Did this headline kind of shock you because when I saw it reported in the U.K. press, I was stunned.
